For the third consecutive time since 2014. the Mount Sinai South Nassau nursing staff has been recognized for excellence in patient care by the independent, nationally recognized American Nurses Credentialing Center after a rigorous review process.
Mount Sinai South Nassau has achieved Magnet® recognition as a reflection of its nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. Magnet recognition is determined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, which ensures that rigorous standards for nursing excellence are met. With this credential, South Nassau joins the Magnet community — a select group of fewer than 10 percent of all health care organizations in the nation.
Years of Preparation Required
A Magnet-designated hospital is recognized by the ANCC only after demonstrating excellence in patient care in more than 35 areas of focus throughout the entire hospital, demanding widespread participation from leadership and staff. The Magnet Recognition Program provides the ultimate benchmark for patients and their families to measure the quality of care they can expect at a hospital. It is called “Magnet” because of the hospital’s ability to attract and retain professional nurses.
Achieving this designation comes as the result of years of preparation and long-standing commitments to nursing and patient care through quality and process improvements, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Gold Standard of Nursing Excellence
Magnet recognition has become the gold standard for nursing excellence and is taken into consideration when the public judges health care organizations. In fact, U.S. News & World Report's annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care.
To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that begins with the submission of an electronic application, followed by written documentation demonstrating qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding patient care and outcomes, and it culminates with an on-site visit to thoroughly assess the applicant. After this rigorous on-site review, the Commission on Magnet reviews the completed appraisal and votes to determine whether Magnet recognition will be granted.
In particular, the Magnet model is designed to provide a framework for nursing practice, research and measurement of outcomes. Through this framework, ANCC can assess applicants across a number of components and dimensions to gauge an organization’s nursing excellence. The foundation of this model is composed of various elements deemed essential to delivering superior patient care. These include the quality of nursing leadership and coordination and collaboration across specialties, as well as processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care.
