Interim Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology
Bhanu Singh, MD is the Interim in Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology. He is an advanced endoscopist who performs specialized endoscopic procedures to diagnose and treat diseases of the digestive system. He serves as Medical Director of the Center for Interventional Endoscopy at Mount Sinai South Nassau. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.Dr. Singh earned his medical degree from the American University of Antigua College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in general gastroenterology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Elmhurst Hospital Center in New York, NY. He then completed fellowship training in Advanced Endoscopy at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.

Steven J. Friedman, MD

Steven J. Friedman, MD, is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. He earned his medical degree from The University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, and completed his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Northwestern University, McGraw  Medical Center, in Chicago, IL.

Irving Levine, MD

Irving Levine, MD

Irving Levine, MD is a gastroenterologist who specializes in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. Dr. Levine is the Director of IBD at Mount Sinai South Nassau. Dr. Levine oversees all aspects of IBD care, including medication management, biologic infusion therapy, endoscopic evaluation, and intervention. He works closely with his colorectal surgery colleagues to provide comprehensive IBD care. Dr. Levine is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Dr. Levine obtained his medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY, and completed his internal medicine residency at NYU Langone Health in New York City. He completed his general gastroenterology training at Northwell Health and IBD advanced fellowship at NYU Langone Health. Dr. Levine is published in peer-reviewed journals and has authored numerous manuscripts. He is an active member of American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and American Gastroenterology Association (AGA).

Stephen Mulrooney, MD, FACG

Stephen Mulrooney, MD, FACG Stephen Mulrooney, MD, FACG, Director of Motility, Mount Sinai South Nassau, brings to his patients over thirty years of experience as a gastroenterologist. He is a graduate of the accelerated six-year Biomedical Program of RPI and Albany Medical College. After residency at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Manhattan, he did his fellowship in gastroenterology at New York Medical College. He served as a Major in the United States Air Force, where he was Chief of Endoscopy at Robert L. Thompson Hospital, Fort Worth, Texas. He has authored numerous publications in gastroenterologyand has been an active faculty participant in fellowship programs. His areas of expertise include GERD, esophageal motility disorders, esophageal manometry, video capsule endoscopy, 24-hour pH studies, BRAVO, anorectal motility disorders, endoscopy, and colonoscopy. He is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine.

Stavros Stavropoulos, MD, AGAF, FASGE, FGJES, NYSGEF

Dr. Stavropoulos earned his bachelor’s in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry at Yale summa cum laude and medical degree with AOA distinction at Columbia where he also completed all his training including a advanced endoscopy fellowship. He served as Director of Endoscopic Ultrasound at Columbia for 6 years and as Director of Endoscopy and of the Program in Advanced Endoscopy at NYU-Long Island (Winthrop) for 14 years.

He is now leading the Endoscopic Surgery & 3rd space endoscopy program at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital. Dr. Stavropoulos is an expert in EUS & ERCP, but has gained international recognition for his pioneering work in treating achalasia with the POEM procedure. He was the first gastroenterologist in the world to perform a POEM procedure in 2009 (just months after Japanese thoracic surgeon H. Inoue), and has performed over 1,000 esophageal POEMs. He has published the largest and most comprehensive POEM series by any US operator to date with exceptional long-term outcomes. He has continued to innovate, recently publishing an improved POEM technique that minimizes reflux.

Dr. Stavropoulos has also been a US pioneer in ESD, for non-invasive en bloc removal of complex polyps & early cancers (first ESD cases in the US in 2005 with recent publication of the largest Western single-operator ESD series). He also pioneered EFTR/STER for non-invasive endoscopic resection of mesenchymal GI tumors such as GISTs, (first cases in the US in 2012; largest US series). Dr. Stavropoulos is a fellow of the ASGE and AGA, member of SAGES, and one of a small number of international endoscopists with honorary fellowship to the Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FJGES), one of the oldest and most revered endoscopy societies in the world.
