Mount Sinai South Nassau Dedicates Maidenbaum Health Care Heroes Plaza

Iris and Shalom Maidenbaum, Nassau property tax reduction experts, make significant gift to honor health care workers

Shalom and Iris Maidenbaum, founders of Maidenbaum Property Tax Reduction Group and prominent Long Island philanthropists, have generously made a significant gift donated to Mount Sinai South Nassau to honor healthcare workers.

A newly constructed park in front of the Oceanside hospital will serve as a space to commemorate the selfless efforts of nurses, doctors, and support staff who bravely cared for thousands of critically ill patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mount Sinai South Nassau will dedicate this 10,000 square-foot park as "Maidenbaum Health Care Heroes Plaza."

The gift from Shalom and Iris Maidenbaum and the Maidenbaum Property Tax Reduction Group, LLC. will go toward the hospital’s ongoing effort to bring high-level specialty care to the South Shore so residents and their families don’t have to travel to the city or to the North Shore for advanced treatment.

During the pandemic, the South Shore of Long Island was among the hardest-hit areas. To care for seriously ill patients who streamed into its Emergency Department, Mount Sinai South Nassau expanded its capacity to more than over 500 beds and transformed its patient care units to provide specialized critical care to over 15,000 COVID-19 positive patients.

The Maidenbaum Health Care Heroes Plaza, located at One Healthy Way across from the hospital's main entrance at the corner of One Healthy Way and Oswald Court, will be frequented daily by thousands of patients, visitors, and staff. It features pavers, bricks, trees, and benches from the hospital's "Buy a Brick" campaign, inscribed with messages honoring special individuals in the lives of hospital staff, benefactors, and residents. A large U.S. flag displayed inside the building's main Western facing window provides a backdrop for the park.

Proceeds from the campaign will be used to maintain the plaza and offset costs of the hospital’s ongoing expansion projects, which includes the four-story Feil Family Pavilion that is scheduled to open this fall. The pavilion will be home to an expanded Emergency Department with dedicated treatment areas for pediatric and behavioral health patients and the capacity to see approximately 80,000 patients annually. It will also feature 40 new critical care beds and nine modern operating rooms equipped to provide open heart surgery, pending New York State Department of Health approval.
