Investment to Date to Restore Medical Services in Long Beach

Mount Sinai South Nassau has invested more than $38 million to date as part of the effort to restore emergency medical services to the barrier island, using a combination of its own resources, FEMA funds and New York State Department of Health grants. A construction of a permanent home for the Long Beach free-standing Emergency Department – estimated at $45 million, including $40 million in FEMA funds – will be in addition to the more than $38 million that has already been invested at the site of the former Long Beach Medical Center, which was shuttered after damage from Superstorm Sandy in October of 2012.

Mount Sinai South Nassau’s free-standing Emergency Department in Long Beach has treated more than 18,000 patients since it opened in August of 2015 as a 9-1-1 receiving Emergency Department, the only free-standing Emergency Department on Long Island. Of the more than 18,000 patients served, 87 percent have been treated and released without having to leave the barrier island. Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Emergency Department in Long Beach has consistently received patient satisfaction scores in the 90th percentile on independently conducted, mandatory surveys that are reported directly to the federal government.

Cost Estimate

*In March 2014, South Nassau received a $21 million grant from the New York State Department of Health HEAL NY Capital Grant Program to help facilitate the purchase of the Long Beach Medical Center assets and provide services to Long Beach and the barrier island.
