Diagnosis and Testing
Many kidney masses are found incidentally during the work-up of other medical issues. These growths do not typically cause any symptoms. Although sometimes benign (not cancerous), they can also be kidney cancers. Luckily, most kidney cancers are extremely treatable and curable when caught early.
The choice, quality, and interpretation of imaging is critical in the diagnosis of renal masses. The difference between a benign growth and a malignant tumor can be subtle, so we study kidney masses from every angle, including ultrasound, CT scan or MRI. We work very closely with the radiologists to ensure patients get the best imaging possible.
We can often spare the healthy part of the kidney and remove the tumor only, which is called a partial nephrectomy or kidney sparing surgery. The Da Vinci robot offers enhanced vision, precision, and control leading to shorter hospital stay, less pain and blood loss, and smaller incisions compared to traditional kidney surgery.
Treatment
Treatment options depend on the size and location of kidney tumors. We feel fortunate that we are able to offer a wide range of choices, including:
- Robotic partial nephrectomy
- Ablation of tumors (using heat of freezing to kill cells)
- Tumor biopsies
- Observation of tumors, also known as active surveillance, for select candidates
