Clinical Rotations

Inpatient Medicine
The medicine team, consisting Transitional Year residents and senior Family Medicine residents, are responsible for the care of Family Medicine Center patients requiring hospitalization or Emergency Room consults, admissions of patients who do not have a physician with admitting privileges, and for emergent care of any hospitalized patients. A Traditional Rotating Internship faculty member functions as the teaching attending for these patients and oversees the care delivered by the residents via daily teaching rounds.  

The Director of Medicine and a Transitional Year faculty member, along with a number of attending internists and sub-specialists on the medical staff, directly oversee the inpatient internal medicine rotation. All admissions are formally presented to selected attending physicians during daily rounds. As a result, instruction is assured from four complementary sources: the Director of Medicine, the attending staff physicians, the Transitional Year faculty, and senior residents.

Transitional Year residents, along with Family Medicine Residents, comprise the medicine teams responsible for the initial evaluation, the diagnostic work-up and the therapeutic management of patients admitted to the teaching service. Residents learn the different aspects of patient care by following patients from the beginning of their hospitalization through to their discharge. Additionally the patient’s primary care resident actively participates in the management of their patients regardless of their rotation. This ensures continuity of patient care.

Pediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics is under the guidance of two full-time Directors who are part of the staff of 40 pediatricians. There are also two full-time neonatologists for supervision and training. There are 11,000 admissions to the 22-bed inpatient service and 1,200 newborns annually. The large number of pediatric Emergency Room visits, as well as the large number of pediatric patients at the Family Medicine Center, affords excellent ambulatory pediatric training.

At Mount Sinai South Nassau, the Transitional Year resident works closely with the Pediatric Hospitalists. The resident evaluates and admits patients in the Emergency Room, participate in daily teaching rounds with the Director of Pediatrics, and attend Caesarean sections and complicated deliveries.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is under the on-site supervision of two neonatologists. Daily teaching rounds are made with the attending neonatologists. This level of neonatal care allows our Traditional Rotating Internship residents to gain educational exposure to a variety of neonatal problems.

Surgery
The Department is staffed by more than 100 board eligible/ board certified surgeons. There is an advanced design, 12-room operating suite where more than 6,000 procedures are performed annually, along with a busy ambulatory surgery unit. Our residents will work alongside surgery residents to assist during surgery, manage inpatient surgical patients, and participate in the initial evaluation and management of trauma and acute surgical cases in the Emergency Room. Residents also have the opportunity to learn and practice multiple bedside procedures.

Obstetrics and Gynecology
Approximately 1,200 deliveries are performed each year at Mount Sinai South Nassau, with over 300 deliveries from Family Medicine Center patients. There are six spacious labor rooms, which can be converted to birthing rooms, two operative/delivery suites, and two recovery rooms on our Labor and Delivery floor. A full-time obstetrician supervises the Traditional Rotating Internship resident during the rotation. A senior OBGYN resident is available as a resource to our residents, but our residents have a separate cohort of patients from the OBGYN residents. Residents are trained in the full management of low risk pregnancy and uncomplicated delivery and episiotomy/repair. The resident also assists in Caesarean section and gynecologic surgery. Our clinic colposcopy equipment enables us to provide colposcopy, cryotherapy, and endometrial biopsy to our residents’ continuity patients.

Residents have the opportunity to participate in a weekly outpatient gynecology clinic, where the resident is exposed to gynecologic office procedures, including but not limited to colposcopies, endometrial biopsies, IUD placements, and Nexplanon placements.

Emergency Medicine
Our modern Level II Emergency Department is one of the busiest on Long Island's South Shore, with more than 60,000 patient visits per year. There are 12 monitored beds, including a separate suite for major trauma and cardiac emergencies, a pediatric suite, an ophthalmology-ENT room, an orthopedic suite and a “Fast Track” area. There is a full-time board certified Director and 24 hour coverage by staff Emergency Department physicians.

Residents will work with Emergency Department attendings to provide acute care management and critical care. This rotation will improve differential diagnosis insight and skills, and coordination of inpatient and outpatient healthcare with primary care providers and other services.

Ambulatory Medicine
Transitional Year residents have weekly continuity clinics throughout the year to provide longitudinal care.

Electives
Residents have three months of elective time which will allow them to personalize the program to support their endeavors into the specialty of their choice. Electives are available in the following disciplines: Cardiology, Dermatology, ENT, Emergency Medicine, Geriatrics, Hematology / Oncology, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Neurology, Obstetrics / Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics / Sports Medicine, Palliative Care, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiology, Rheumatology, Surgery, Urology, Women’s Health. Unlisted electives may be arranged with the approval of the Program Director.
