Community Outreach Programs

Health Fairs
Mount Sinai South Nassau participates in local health fairs, providing health and wellness information as well as information about programs and services offered by Mount Sinai South Nassau/Department of Family Medicine. These events include those hosted by South Nassau as well as those in which we are invited to participate at churches, civic organizations, senior centers, schools and libraries throughout our service area.

Outreach and Screening Services
The Department of Community Education coordinates a number of free community screenings for prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, head and neck cancer, and skin cancer in addition to conducting screening/risk assessment for cardiovascular health (blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol), prevention of stroke and management of diabetes. Residents provide assistance and support regarding risk assessment/risk reduction with individuals and are often available for “ask the doctor” interaction at selected events and screenings.

Teddy Bear Clinic
An educational program is offered to kindergarten students, designed to provide them with a better understanding of how common emergencies are diagnosed and treated in a hospital/emergency room setting. Content covered includes X-rays, suturing, casting for broken bones and respiratory treatments (including the hazards of smoking), to decrease a child's fear associated with the emergency room or hospital. Approximately 750 students from Oceanside and Rockville Centre attend this program each year.
