South Nassau Appoints Medical Director of Wound Care
South Nassau Communities Hospital recently named Jeffrey Stein, MD, medical director of the hospital’s Wound Care Center®. Dr. Stein has completed fellowships in vascular surgery and surgical critical care.
"Our Wound Care Center is recognized for its standard-setting treatment success rate and for its planning and implementation of patient-centered wound care treatment plans," said Joshua Kugler, MD, Chief Medical Officer. "We are confident that under Dr. Stein’s direction the Center will build on its tradition of excellence so that residents of the communities we serve don’t have to leave their neighborhoods to access advanced, high-quality wound care services.”
As medical director, Dr. Stein will be responsible for the administration and operations of the Wound Care Center and oversee the selection, training, and management of the Center’s staff of physicians.
Dr. Stein is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is board certified in general surgery, vascular surgery, and surgical critical care. He is a specialist in general vascular surgery with an emphasis in peripheral vascular interventions, including diagnostic angiography, the treatment of peripheral endovascular lesions with angioplasty and stent placement, and endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Dr. Stein earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a medical degree from the School of Medicine at Washington University in
St. Louis, Mo. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident.
The Wound Care Center provides multidisciplinary and comprehensive care of patients with chronic, non-healing wounds caused by diabetes, ischemia and other health problems. Since 1998, the center has treated more than 2,000 patients and has a healing outcome rate above 90 percent. The Center features a multi-disciplinary healthcare team, which consists of experienced physicians, nurses, infectious disease specialists, dieticians, pharmacy consultants, physical therapists, orthotists, and home care nurses.
Wound care treatment plans are complemented by a comprehensive educational program on prevention and awareness, medical intervention, aftercare, and ongoing support. The patient, family, and/or caregiver provided information specific to the assessed needs, abilities, and readiness of the patient. Its instructional strategies include verbal, written, alternative language, videotape, demonstration, and return demonstration.
