South Names Richard J. Murphy President and CEO
South Nassau Communities Hospital is pleased to announce that Mr. Richard J. Murphy has been selected as the hospital’s next President & CEO. Mr. Murphy will succeed Joseph A. Quagliata, who is retiring at the end of 2012.
Mr. Murphy comes to South Nassau from Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island, where he has served as President and Chief Executive Officer. His accomplishments include the execution of a successful financial post divestiture from St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center of New York, which improved facility operating performance; and development of a strategic planning process to enhance physician partnerships, increase market share and expand capital reinvestment. His past experience also includes a leadership role in Long Island’s Catholic Health System, as the Executive Vice President of CHS’s Suffolk Region hospitals, which included his serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Good Samaritan, St. Charles and St. Catherine of Siena hospitals.
“South Nassau Communities Hospital has enjoyed remarkable growth and success under the leadership of Joseph A. Quagliata,” said Joseph J. Fennessy, Chair of South Nassau’s Board of Directors. During Mr. Quagliata’s tenure as President & CEO, the hospital’s inpatient admissions have grown by 90 percent and its ambulatory volume has jumped by 127 percent, outpacing those of many other hospitals in the area. In addition, new services, specialty lines of practice and technological advances have been added, including, most notably, the hospital’s 174,000 square-foot North Addition, which set the standard for health care excellence when it opened in April 2006. Other leading-edge care added has included interventional cardiology, a Center for Advanced Orthopedics, and the Gertrude and Louis Feil Cancer Center, which is the only cancer center on Long Island to offer the Novalis Tx™ and Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ technologies for body and brain radiosurgery.
Said Fennessy, “We are confident of the hospital’s continued success under Mr. Murphy’s leadership, and we will continue to provide the communities of the South Shore with the superior compassionate and expert care for which the South Nassau name has come to be known.”
