Roslyn Savings Foundation Grant Supports Health Services Program for Seniors
South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Senior Outreach Services Program recently received an $8,500 grant from the Roslyn Savings Foundation.
The Senior Outreach Services Program provides health outreach, education, screening, and immunization services for older adults in southern Nassau County. The program recently launched a falls prevention service to help older adults reduce their risk of injury due to falls. The new service provides risk reduction education and services and in-home assessments conducted by South Nassau Communities Hospital Home Care.
"The Roslyn Savings Foundation is devoted to supporting organizations, programs and services that educate members of the community about health issues and provide the solutions for those issues," said Marian Conway, Executive Director. “South Nassau’s Senior Outreach Services Program provides services that enhance the health and wellness of our senior citizens.”
South Nassau’s Senior Outreach Program serves a growing population of Nassau County senior citizens who live at home, many of them living on fixed incomes, and provides services that help seniors to maintain their health and wellness and continue living safely in the community.
Services, which are provided free of charge at senior centers and other community locations throughout the hospital’s service area, include:
Administration of flu vaccinations
Health screenings for prostate cancer, skin cancer, high blood pressure, cholesterol and cardiac risk assessments that support prevention, early diagnosis and
The program’s community-based educational seminars reach hundreds of seniors each year. Recent seminars have addressed preventing falls, steps that older adults can take to protect their eyesight as they age, and advice on how to maintain a heart-healthy diet.
- Wellness and health education lectures on topics of interest to older adults that teach preventive health care skills and promote good self-care; and
Training for staff of senior housing sites in First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
