Breast MRI Specialist Joins Complete Women’s Imaging Center
South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Complete Women’s Imaging Center, PC recently named George Russell Autz, MD, director of Breast MRI Services. Fellowship trained in breast imaging, Dr. Autz has more than 20 years experience in medical diagnostic imaging, specializing in women’s and breast health imaging for the past 15 years.
"Women throughout the region are turning to Complete Women’s Imaging Center for the specialists and advanced diagnostic services that are focused on maintaining breast health and detecting and diagnosing abnormalities in their earliest stages,” said Joshua Kugler, MD, chief medical officer at South Nassau. “Breast MRI is an increasingly influential adjunct to mammography and ultrasound in detecting breast cancer. Dr. Autz is recognized for his leadership and experience in this screening specialty and will spearhead the Center’s utilization and application of the Breast MRI exam.”
Studies have shown that Breast MRI, especially in high-risk patients, is proving to be an important adjunct study for breast cancer screening. In addition, diagnostic Breast MRI is gaining increasing importance for staging women with newly diagnosed breast cancer as well as helping problem-solve difficult mammography examinations.
Dr. Autz is board-certified in both diagnostic radiology and internal medicine. Prior to joining South Nassau, Dr. Autz served simultaneously as co-director of a leading breast imaging center as well as chief of Women’s Imaging for one of the region’s premiere healthcare providers.
He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry in 1981 and received his MD degree in 1985 from Stony Brook University. Dr. Autz completed residency training in internal medicine in 1988 and diagnostic radiology in 1992 at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.
Recently appointed councilor at large representing the New York State Radiological Society, Dr. Autz is also a member of numerous professional societies including the Society of Breast Imaging, Radiological Society of North America, Long Island Radiological Society, American Roentgen Ray Society and American College of Radiology.
Dr. Autz has joined Abraham Port, MD, who is the director of South Nassau’s Complete Women’s Imaging Center. Dr. Port has more than 25 years experience in breast health imaging and is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology and is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. The center offers an array of advanced imaging services dedicated to women’s health. This includes digital screening and diagnostic mammography, breast and pelvic ultrasound, and MRI of the breast. Comprehensive interventional breast service is offered including stereotactic, ultrasound, and MRI-guided needle biopsy. Wire localizations using mammography, ultrasound or MRI are provided for the breast surgeon.
