Commission on Cancer Approval

Outstanding Achievement Award

South Nassau Communities Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program has received the Outstanding Achievement Award from The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. The hospital is one of just five hospitals in New York and only 83 in the United States to receive the prestigious award.

The designation demonstrates that South Nassau meets the highest national standards for state-of-the-art cancer prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent disease, support services, and end-of-life care.

South Nassau has held approval from the Commission on Cancer since 1978.

Designated as one of only two Commission on Cancer-approved Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Programs in Nassau County, South Nassau sees more than 1,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year, provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment services that are available on site or by referral, and has a program medical staff whose members are board-certified in the major medical specialties, including oncology.

Through an exclusive partnership with the American Cancer Society, the CoC provides the public with information on the resources, services, and cancer treatment experience for each CoC-accredited cancer program. This information is shared with the public on the ACS Web site at www.cancer.org and through the ACS National Cancer Information Center at 1-800-ACS-2345.

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer was founded in 1922. It is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and representatives of 47 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care. Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.
